Barely staying a-float~~~

Well, conviction strikes again.  I look back and realize that I haven’t blogged since March!  Well, I suppose I just need to be happy that I get around to blogging once a month ;o)

This year has been incredibly difficult for Team V!  Trying to balance life with 3 kids full time and a teenager part-time… has been difficult at best.

The things of normal life would be enough, but then throw in a flood and all of the work to put the house back together, a car accident and a looming heart surgery and sometimes I feel like I’m going to loose it!!

With that said, I can honestly say, that I am so grateful for my family and my faith!  Without them, I wouldn’t know how to begin to grab ahold of each day and move forward.

So I’m happy to report that we are on hold with the house projects for now.

Here is what we’ve been busy doing:(pics to come)

Master bathroom:We have ripped down a wall and taken out the floor in the master bathroom and put in hop scotch pattern noce tile.  Mike has rewired the electrical and moved a gas line. We will be installing a heater fan, and upgrading the lighting fixtures maybe even redoing the vanity and countertop as time and money allows.  The bathroom will also get a fancy new glass door at the entrance.

Dining room: the ceiling has been patched and textured, which took 2 seperate dry wallers, because the first one did a terrible job.  I think the drywall dust has been all cleaned up, at this point, and I am happy to not see a film all over everything in the house. (the ceiling still needs to be painted, but we’re waiting a bit for that project)

Laundry room/upstairs: the laundry room has been put back together (except for the baseboard) and I am happy to say that we have installed the new carpet through the entire upstairs.

Kitchen: we have installed the new appliances, sink and faucet, pulled out the old counter top (4×4 white tile) and installed granite tile.  We built a peninsula/bar off of the right side of the counter and installed a noce travertine subway tile backsplash.  (we still need to refinish our cabinets, get new doors and drawer fronts and address the under cabinet lighting, but we will get around to that eventually)

For those who do not know, I was rear-ended on my way to work at the end of April.  My car has been in the shop for almost a month!!!  My back has been hurting and so I’m trying to squeeze in appointments to see the chiropractor, which has proven to be very difficult with having to juggle 3 kids. But I’m trying to make time for it.

On another more positive and fun note… Griffyn has become quite the little mover and shaker.  He is walking everywhere, and beginning to climb the stairs!  He is definitely keeping us on our toes.

Team V in progress…

This past month has flown by… here we are… the 19th of March!  I blogged about wanting to post more consistently, and honestly, I have sat down at my computer several times and either been overwhelmed by what I want to say, or not felt that I have anything to say, or… ran out of time to finish my thoughts and express what I wanted to say!

So here I am, Saturday morning.

The V home is all a buzz and has been for a few hours now.  It is drizzling outside and I am sipping on my coffee.  Mind you, I’ve been up for hours already.  My morning started, or rather my night ended or… I’m not really sure which it is, with Griffyn’s second night time/early morning feed somewhere in the 3:00-4:00am hour.  Mike got up and left for work at 5 am. I was awakened again at 6:00am by the sound of Rylie and Griffyn playing.  My first instinct upon hearing Rylie’s squeaky voice was to feel annoyed!!  AHHH, can’t I just catch a few more minutes of sleep??  But as I lay there and listened, she was in Griffyn’s room.  She was talking in her little 3 year old voice to Griffyn.  ”Here you go Baby Grif!” she said as she handed him a toy over the top of his crib.  And Griffyn, of course, was obliged to reply with giggles and squeals of joy!  So the morning was saved, as my heart was warmed, instead of annoyed, by the early wake up!

This morning is just like any other morning around here!  Starts way too early… and rushes off before I have a chance to grab ahold of it completely.

We have been so busy lately, trying to put our house back together.  I posted on FB a few weeks ago about the huge hole in our dining room ceiling!  Well, it got there as a result of a leak upstairs in our laundry room.  The leak caused over $10,000 in damage to the carpet, trim work, and drywall!  Thank God for insurance.  For the time being we are waiting on the carpet, so that we can get the best possible deal for the best possible carpet.  Who knows when we will have enough money to re-carpet the entire upstairs again?  We have patched the hole in the dining room ceiling, but it still needs some tweaking with respect to the texture, and we are probably going to need to repaint the entire ceiling down stairs. (which wasn’t part of the plan).  I am pleased to announce that we have taken this opportunity to get rid of that hideous light fixture that used to hang in the dining room.  We have upgraded to one that I like much, much better.

So while we are crazy busy, rushing here and there all week.  We have continued much of that same pace on the weekend lately, as we have been doing demo and trying to reconstruct part of our house.  That stinkin’ drywall dust gets everywhere!!

We are making progress.

I must admit that I am already tired of the whole thing and just want to pay top dollar to get people in here to do it right the first time and be DONE!  But I keep reminding myself that patience is a virtue… and it really, really is!  Especially for this mother of 4! If we are careful and smart, we may just save enough money to replace that leaky washer so that we don’t have another catastrophe.

Here is a picture I took from one of the days that we were drying out the ceiling: (these pics are from my iPhone… forgive the poor quality)

Skipping and Jumping

Well, I feel like skipping and jumping!  I have been meaning to update my portfolio on my website, and freshen up my branding a bit.  I have been feeling like my logo didn’t really represent me and my attitude about photography.  I’m still tweaking things, but for now, I’m really excited about the few, subtle changes.

I am going to be contacting some of my former clients to get comments for my “press” link on my website, and I will also be updating my pricing and image packages in the next few weeks and months.

If you’ve been thinking about talking to me about taking some pictures for you… stop thinking and act!

I will be increasing my session fee for 2011, and I will not be offering the same image package options. So… ACT NOW!

What do you think of the little something that I’m working on for a new logo.(see above)  I like the camera with the heart in the middle… it’s kinda saying, “I love photography”, which for me… is what I want to communicate!!   It could also be saying that “I am capturing love through the lens of my camera”, which again, is totally what I want to convey with my photos.  I’m continuing to explore options for all of my branding.  I just want things to be fun, simple and consistent.   I feel like some of the updates to my website really are starting to express what I want to say with my photos.  It is so dang hard to pick photos for a portfolio.  I am always torn between picking the photos that I think people will want to see on my site, and the photos that I want to show.  I am learning to be more and more confident in showing what I like, because in the long run, that is what someone hiring me, should be hoping to get.  I hope people will want me to take their pictures because they like what they see??

Here’s a screen shot of my new splash page. Check out the fun little clip art vectors that I found.  The typewriter is for my blog link, and the antique camera is for my photography website link!  Just a bit of what’s moving and shaking and making me want to skip and jump!

below is another screen shot of the home page of my website!  I’ll be adding a few more images to the running slide show.  But I’ve also updated the galleries with some of the work that I’ve done in the past year.  If you were a client of mine, you just may see yourself in either the “Joy” or “Happiness” galleries.  (I have temporarily included a gallery of some wedding pictures in the “Love” gallery for my dear friend Mary… it’s only there temporarily because I’m really not a wedding photographer;-)

Focus!

I am just beginning to go through images from 2010!  I really need to update my portfolio… needless to say, I have only blogged a small portion of images over the last year.  As I was poring over some images from the end of summer, I came across these fun images.

I remember the day!  It was a beautiful summer day.  We had wasted away the entire day and somehow didn’t even make it outside.  I was still trying to figure out how to balance the newborn with the other 3 kiddos.  Anyway, I remember the evening beginning to fall, and  I could feel the light fading.  I just had to get outside!  The baby was sleeping and the girls broke out of the front door.  They both went over to the large daisy bushes on the side slope, and then they tried to make a break for the neighbor’s houses to play.  Even now, as I think back, I can almost hear the warm summer breeze blowing through the large palm trees at the front of our house.

Ohhhh summer… come again… SOON!

I was trying to throw the image out of focus, by placing my focal point at the very bottom of the frame.  Then I judged the focal distance and set wide… and put the camera down on the curb- SNAP!  Here are the two images I caught.  FOCUS!  It’s Campbelle walking the line! Rylie is sneaking away ;o)

January: update

Well, I am attempting to pick up the blogging a bit more for 2011.  At least once a month… I’m hoping to update what has been going on with Team V.  With 6 of us in the family, there are always exciting tidbits of life happening!

January has been a month of hanging on by a thread!!  We all enjoyed the 2 weeks off at Christmas, and we even managed to pick up slack and take a few deep breaths by the time we had to jump back into the fast lane, that is our life.  The house was mostly clean, Christmas was packed up and put away, and everyone was healthy!  The healthy part wound up being only a temporary condition.

Griffyn has been teething like crazy, and he cut two teeth and began to crawl!!  His learning curve has been steep, because the poor little guy basically went from “army crawl” to full on crawl in a matter of about 2 days.  Then about 2 days from that, he began pulling himself up to standing.  But as you know, the little ones are good at standing up, but not so good at the sitting down.  He has taken a few good spills… but man, he takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin’  This month, Griffyn is 8 months old!  Wow, how time is flying.  He is up to 3 solid meals a day, and still not sleeping through the night ;o(

Rylie is still going to preschool 5 days a week.  I wish I could say that she loves it… she doesn’t.  She likes it well enough, but every so often my mornings start out on the wrong foot.  She doesn’t want to get up, she gets dressed through fits of tears, and then that usually continues, on and off, until I drop her off and rush back to begin my day of teaching.  It really breaks my heart… having to leave my crying 3 year old, but I know that she will eventually be fine. (usually within a few short minutes).  The big thing this month, with Rylie, has been my worry over her hearing.  I have begun to worry that she may have some deficit in her hearing.  She has had a cold all winter long, with constant congestion.  I was playing a little game with her at bed time, about a  month or so ago.  I would whisper something in one ear, ask her to repeat it, and see if she could.  Then I would whisper something in her other ear.  Kinda like a little game of “telephone” but just with the 2 of us.  I began to notice that she understood me clearly when I spoke in one ear, but said “what”? when I spoke into the other.  Well, of course I freaked out!!  She was at the pediatrician’s office the next day for a look at her ears and a hearing test.  The end result was that she had fluid behind her ear!  FEW!!  But that relief ended up being short lived.  Her ear drum burst a few days later, and I am continuing to feel like her hearing is below normal.  We have appointments with the audiologist, for a deeper hearing screening, AND the ear nose and throat doctor to discuss the fluid and congestion.  AUWGG!

Campbelle has had a decent month.  She is plugging along in kindergarten.  She has been struggling a bit this year.  She began the year a little bit behind, at least that’s what we were told!  Apparently, she didn’t learn some of the things that she was expected to know to prepare for kindergarten while she was in preschool.  Now don’t get me started about that one… but suffice it to say, she was in preschool 5 days a week for 2 years!!!  You do the math… that’s an awful lot of preschool to still end up unprepared!  Anyway, the deficit seems to be continuing, and she just received a less than stellar report card.  Don’t worry… I’m on it! (because I have nothing else to do with my time)  I have opened up a dialog between her teachers and I.  I am hoping that my 8  years of teaching (2 of which were in kindergarten) and my masters degree in education, can help me catch up my little kindergarten-er!  This past week has really knocked Campbelle on her little fanny.  She has missed the last 2 days of school because she has been sick.  Her fever spiked at almost 106 degrees the other night, as I was throwing her into a cold bath!  The good news is, she seems to be doing much better.

Wesley is fully into his first year as a teenager, complete with attitude.  He is doing very well in school, and continues to sport the shaggy long hair that just barely covers his eyes.  Most recently, he has taken up BMX racing again.  He has a membership to a track, and gets to practice and race a couple times a week.  We have not been able to get out to the track to watch him race as of yet.  But we plan to try to get out there one of these days.  Wesley has also really begun to enjoy skateboarding.  We try to get over to a local park so that both Wesley and Mike can do a bit of skateboarding.  Wesley just barely drops in… but he does.  Mike is trying to encourage him to do more at the skatepark, but after breaking his arm a couple of years ago, at the Encinitas YMCA skatepark, I don’t think we should push him.  He is also WAY into his Playstation3 and a couple of the video games that he got for Christmas.  I’ve really begun to try to limit his screen time, especially when I read a research study about a link that researchers are making between more than 2 hours of screen time a day, and psychological problems!!!

Mike is continuing to work at Camp Pendleton, and has been a saint as far as helping out on the home front is concerned.  He picks the kids up from school, and Griffyn up from daycare, a few days a week.  That way, I can work later and not feel guilty about it, because the kids are home with daddy!  Most days, Mike and I can barely see straight… our life is so busy.  It really is a shame that Griffyn isn’t sleeping through the night, because I think that both Mike and I would have a bit more to give, if we were getting better sleep.  I am continuing to evaluate my ideas about EXTRAORDINARY adventures for the family this year.  I haven’t come up with anything inspiring as of yet!

AND…. since a post is no fun without pictures… here are a few of the guys!
